Badshot Lea Bloomers

Badshot Lea Pond
I am sure many of you will have noticed that a lot of work has gone on at the pond over the last eighteen months.
I thought it might be useful to give an overview of what has and still is going on.

Badshot Lea pond was probably constructed in the 14th century as a fish pond to the moated Manor House, that stood nearby. It first appeared on maps in the 18th century. It is currently owned and managed by Waverley BC.

In the summer of 2016, after years of neglect Waverley obtained funding of £8000 from Tesco’s to clear and de-silt the site. Work was undertaken in the autumn of 2016.
Badshot Lea Bloomers was set up by BLCA in part to provide volunteers to work with Waverley to maintain and improve the pond for both residents and wildlife.

Over the past year and a half volunteers have done more than 150hrs at the pond with great support from Tices Meadows Bird group and Farnham in Bloom community group. We have cleared scrub, planted three trees, put up bird boxes and gained a new bench. I must give a big thank you to all those involved.

In recent days Waverley contractors have removed a silver birch that had been drilled and poisoned by someone several years ago. They also coppiced trees in the south corner near the main road.

We hope to see the benefits of all this work starting to show this spring. I hope many of you will use and enjoy this great asset to the village. If you are going to feed the ducks please no bread. Squires garden centre (other centres are available) sell Swan and Duck food. A big bag 650gm for less than £5. A lot less than a visit to Bird World.

An on going project by Waverley is to solve the seepage by Hebe Hair. They have carried out a site study and monitored water levels. Let’s hope that they will soon get round to solving the problem.
The next project for the Bloomers is to get funding to replace and extend the dipping platform.

Our next village activity is
Badshot Lea Big Litter pick. On 10th March starting at the Hop Kiln at 10am.
All welcome. Bags and pickers provided. Come and join us if only for the coffee and doughnuts.
